One of the highest-profile Patriots coaches from the disastrous 2024 season is apparently not going to be back with the team next fall.

Alex Van Pelt, the Patriots’ offensive coordinator during quarterback Drake Maye’s rookie campaign, won’t be returning for a second season, according to MassLive’s Chris Mason and Mark Daniels.

Van Pelt, 54, arrived in New England a year ago alongside first-year head coach Jerod Mayo. Unfortunately for both, the 2024 season proved to be a debacle. The Patriots’ offense labored to both move the ball and score, finishing 30th in points and 31st in total yards.

Following the final game, ironically a 23-16 win over the Bills, Mayo was fired. From that point, Van Pelt’s future with New England moved onto increasingly unstable ground.

With the team’s decision to hire Mike Vrabel, and the subsequent report that ex-OC Josh McDaniels will be brought back to retake his old job, Van Pelt’s role was unclear at best.

Still, Van Pelt received praise from arguably the most important person he coached. Maye, New England’s 2024 first-round pick, defended criticism of Van Pelt in December of 2024.

“I think AVP, what he’s done for me this year, and what he’s done for my development has been huge for me,” Maye told reporters. But with the team’s record at 4-13, changes were always going to be made.

In addition to Van Pelt, New England is also expected to see the departures of offensive line coach Scott Peters, receivers coach Tyler Hughes, tight ends coach Bob Bicknell, running backs coach Taylor Embree, assistant receivers coach Tiquan Underwood, and offensive assistant Michael McCarthy.
