Josh McDaniels is reportedly considered ‘the favorite’ for Patriots’ offensive coordinator job
He's already held the role multiple times and is currently not employed.
As the Patriots try to fortify their inconsistent offense under new head coach Mike Vrabel, they may turn to a very familiar face to lead the way.
Josh McDaniels is considered to be “the favorite” to land the offensive coordinator job, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
“Most people believe that Josh McDaniels, former Patriots OC, actually a couple times, still lives in New England, currently not working, would be a prime candidate for that job,” Rapoport said.
Rapoport said he expects Vrabel to talk to McDaniels as they conduct the search.
McDaniels, who was most recently the Las Vegas Raiders’ head coach in 2023, was New England’s offensive coordinator from 2006-2008, then again in 2020 and 2021. He also held many other roles with the Patriots, including personnel assistant, defensive assistant, and quarterbacks coach.
He was a defensive assistant during part of Vrabel’s tenure with the Patriots as a player and was part of six Super Bowls with New England.
Rapaport said Vrabel interviewed Chicago Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown on Tuesday. He said the Patriots also want to talk to Marcus Brady, who’s now a Los Angeles Chargers assistant.
While they’re both in the mix, and it’s possible Alex Van Pelt remains in his current role, Rapoport expects McDaniels to emerge as the frontrunner.
It appears the Patriots are going back to the past as they try to recreate success once again in a new era.
