Patriots are reportedly releasing WR Tyquan Thornton
Thornton, a former second-round pick, had just four catches in six games this season with New England.
The Patriots are releasing 2022 second-round pick Tyquan Thornton, according to multiple reports Saturday morning.
Thornton, a 6-foot-2-inch, 185-pound wide receiver out of Baylor University, has been a healthy scratch in recent weeks.
He ran a 4.28-second 40-yard dash at the 2022 NFL Combine, and his unique combination of speed and size led the Patriots to draft him 50th overall.
Thornton, 24, showed flashes as a rookie, totaling 22 receptions for 247 yards and two touchdowns over 13 games. He averaged 11.2 yards per catch, but he caught just 22 of 45 balls thrown his way.
He finished with 13 receptions for 91 yards and no scores in nine games last year, then four catches for 47 yards in six games this season. He also had six carries for 67 yards and a TD in his time with the Patriots.
The Patriots have plenty of young receivers, and they deemed that Thornton’s production wasn’t up to par.
