The NFL fined Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood $6,324 for unnecessary roughness during a collision with Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.

Last week, Maye left the game early with a head injury after Sherwood hit him at the end of a scramble. Maye was attempting to slide but didn’t get down in time.

Sherwood crashed his helmet into Maye’s and the quarterback finished the drive after being helped up by his teammates. Coach Jerod Mayo said after the game that Maye wanted to go back in but was not allowed because of his injury.

There was no penalty on the play. The NFL conducted a review and decided to levy a fine upon Sherwood. Sherwood said the hit was not intentional.

“If it was helmet-to-helmet, the ref would have called it for one,” Sherwood told reporters. “He just scrambled the pocket. At the end of the day, I’m trying to get to the ball.

“And him as a runner, he just has to do a better job of protecting himself just like I’m trying to do a good job of protecting myself and him as well. I feel like in that moment, I did a great job by going over top of him. My shoulder pad might have hit him in the head, but that’s not intentional.”

Maye, who was limited during practice this week, has since been cleared to play after going through the league’s concussion protocol.
