Tom Brady was roasted on ‘SNL’ Weekend Update
Patriots fans might not enjoy the reference.
Tom Brady is no longer competing directly against New York, but its fans clearly haven’t forgotten him.
The 47-year-old former Patriots quarterback recently saw his status as a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders become official. The news was marked across the football landscape, but probably most notably during a “Saturday Night Live” Weekend Update sketch.
Co-host Colin Jost, a native New Yorker, couldn’t resist a Super Bowl-related dig at Brady.
“Tom Brady has officially become a part-owner of the Las Vegas Raiders,” Jost began, “although Brady himself is still fully owned by the Giants.”
Jost read the joke with such deadpan seriousness that it caused fellow Weekend Update co-host Michael Che to stop for a moment.
“Wow,” Che joked. “That got so intense.”
The comment was — as much as Patriots fans try to forget it — a reference to the two Super Bowls that Brady (and New England) lost to the Giants during his career. The first, Super Bowl XLII, was at the end of what could have been a perfect 19-0 season. The second came several years later in February 2012.
Brady’s ownership status with the Raiders first became public news in 2023, but was held up amid concerns regarding Las Vegas controlling owner Mark Davis lowering the price to accommodate Brady, and also the former QB’s broadcasting career (inviting questions of partiality). But after a review, the sale was recently approved by league owners.
Davis reportedly sold 10.5 percent of his ownership stake in the Raiders, with fellow former Patriot Richard Seymour — who is also a former Raider — acquiring a 0.5 percent stake of his own, per Sports Illustrated‘s Albert Breer.
