Which rookie QB will have the best debut season? Drake Maye didn’t make the top 5 in Fox Sports poll.

An undrafted free-agent and a quarterback with a season-ending injury both finished ahead of Maye.

As part of its “Quarterback Confidential” series, Fox Sports sent out an anonymous poll to 38 NFL quarterbacks about various topics.

The full survey will be released on Thursday, but they published one ranking that may be of interest to Patriots fans on Wednesday.

Which rookie quarterback will have the best debut season, the outlet asked the quarterbacks?

It wasn’t Drake Maye. Maye, who was picked No. 3 overall in this year’s draft, did not make the top 5 in the poll.

Chicago’s Caleb Williams, the No. 1 overall pick, was in first place with 22 votes, more than three times as many as any other player. Washington’s Jayden Daniels, selected one spot ahead of Maye at No. 2, was second with seven votes.

And now for the upsets. Denver’s Bo Nix finished third with five votes. Minnesota’s J.J. McCarthy, who is out for the season with an injury, received one vote. Jacksonville’s John Rhys Plumlee, an undrafted free agent who is currently behind Mac Jones on the depth chart, also received a vote.

Despite closing out the preseason on a high note with flashes of his potential, Maye will begin this season backing up Jacoby Brissett. It’s unclear when the Patriots plan to insert Maye into the starting lineup.

Still, even as the backup, Maye is one snap away from starting if anything happens to Brissett.

Nonetheless, the quarterbacks that Fox Sports polled did not show much faith that this will be a big year for Maye. The Patriots have shown a patient approach with Maye so far. Brissett was named the starter back in the beginning of training camp and that doesn’t appear likely to change anytime soon despite flashes of promise from Maye.
