David Andrews ‘excited to be a part of the change’ with new look Patriots
"I want to finish my career the right way."
David Andrews on staying with the Patriots: While it has been an offseason of profound change for the Patriots — personified mostly by the departure of Bill Belichick — a few familiar faces are staying around.
David Andrews, the Patriots’ 31-year-old center, recently signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him in New England through the 2025 season.
A holdover from the Tom Brady era, Andrews is a two-time Super Bowl winner. The former undrafted free agent is in position to provide a valuable link between the old and new in 2024. He provided some perspective on his excitement at continuing with the Patriots following the team’s first mandatory minicamp practice on Monday.
“I want to finish my career the right way. I care a lot about this organization, and to have it go both ways means a lot” Andrews told reporters. “I’m super excited to be a part of the change and do whatever I can to help for however long I can keep doing it.”
Jerod Mayo added that Andrews’ presence is an important reminder to younger players about the team’s longstanding mentality.
“It was important for us to reward the guys that we want here,” Mayo explained. “The guys that encompass the ‘Patriot Way.’ The guys that come to work each and every day with a good attitude. looking to get better. He’s one of those guys. He’s a leader on this team. And it was important for us to keep him around.”
Surrounded by new faces (including several rookies), Andrews noted that he’s embracing the change.
“It’s kind of like being part of a new organization, but I’m at home,” he said. “Obviously, [the team has a] good coaching staff offensively and Mayo does things differently. But at the same time, I’ve obviously had a relationship with Mayo for a while, we’ve played together, and things like that. So I’ve enjoyed it.”
