‘Everybody wants to be the guy’: Jacoby Brissett shares thoughts on Patriots QB room
"If none of us wanted to play, then our room would be messed up."
From Jacoby Brissett’s perspective, everyone in the Patriots’ quarterback room is eager to emerge as the starter.
He believes that type of competition is healthy and could pay dividends long term.
“Honestly, everybody wants to be the guy,” Brissett told reporters. “Everybody’s competing to be the guy. That’s what you want. If none of us wanted to play, then our room would be messed up.”
He said the organization would be “in bad hands” if that weren’t the case.
At the same time, the veteran Brissett said he hopes to serve as a mentor to the younger players on the team – much like the older Patriots did for him in his first stint.
Brissett highlighted Drake Maye’s talent and said he can make all the throws.
He said he’s excited to work with him, adding that Maye has already used him as a resource. They even played golf earlier this offseason with quarterback Sam Howell, who happens to be a former teammate of each player.
“I remember when I was following Tom [Brady] around,” Brissett said. “He’s already texting me about plays and how I think about things and cadence, all the little nuances of being in this position at this level.”
Brissett called himself “a kid in a candy store” when he first arrived in New England. While he’s much older, and has played on several teams now, the buzz hasn’t dissipated in Foxborough.
“You still feel that same feeling I felt when I was 23 walking into the building again,” Brissett said.
