Jerod Mayo on Tom Brady return rumors: ‘Doubt he’s going to be walking through these doors’

"I love Tom and the door is always open if he wants to come in here and coach, but as far as going on the field, I don't know," Mayo said.

Tom Brady said during a recent appearance on the Deep Cut Podcast that he isn’t opposed to making an NFL comeback.

He mentioned the Patriots as one of a handful of teams that he would consider, but mentioned that he didn’t think the league would allow it if his bid to become a minority owner with the Raiders becomes official.

Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said he doubts Brady would end up suiting up for the Patriots again. Brady is welcome to join his staff as a coach, Mayo said during a recent appearance on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show.

“I love Tom and the door is always open if he wants to come in here and coach, but as far as going on the field, I don’t know,” Mayo said. “…He’d have to come in here and compete and I know he loves competition, but I doubt he’s going to be walking through these doors anytime soon.”

Brady, who will turn 47 in August, last played for the Patriots in 2019. He retired from pro football for the second time in February of 2023.

The Patriots selected quarterback Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft last week. New England also signed Jacoby Brissett and drafted Joe Milton. Bailey Zappe and Nathan Rourke are still on the roster as well.

Hill said he didn’t think Brady would be up for training camp, and Mayo agreed.

“Exactly. That’s right,” Mayo said. “He’ll be one of those guys that if something happens in November and we’re in a good position – hey, come in. Nah, I’m good on that.”

Mayo said he plans to let New England’s quarterbacks compete for the starting spot during the preseason.
