Here’s what Drake Maye’s visit to Foxborough could look like
The UNC quarterback will travel to New England Friday for the Patriots' first official 30 visit ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Drake Maye could get a glimpse into his future when the top-tier draft prospect visits Gillette Stadium on Friday.
The Patriots will reportedly host the UNC quarterback on an official 30 visit, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. Following successful meetings during the quarterback’s pro day in Chapel Hill, N.C. last week, Maye remains a strong contender for the team’s No. 3 overall pick.
“They’ve been great,” Maye told reporters last Thursday. “For such a historic program and team and history up there in New England, so just getting the chance to know them, get to know what they’re about, and their champion mindset of getting back to the glory days has been cool.”
The Patriots will also host LSU’s Jayden Daniels on Monday, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. The two prospects are expected to be the second and third players off the board on April 25, with the Commanders hanging on to the No. 2 overall pick in pursuit of their next franchise quarterback.
While Maye’s visit to Foxborough won’t include any work on the gridiron, it’ll allow the Patriots’ top brass to see the signal caller on their home field.
“He’s planning on having dinner with the Patriots brass tonight and then tomorrow going through the 30 visit,” Breer said on NBC Sports Boston Thursday. “They can put you through a physical, you can have meetings with the owner, with the GM, with the head coach… you can meet veteran players.”
The visit, Breer said, is a critical part of the pre-draft process. Head coach Jerod Mayo has been open about the fact that while drafting a quarterback is a “priority,” he has to be one-hundred percent confident in a player first.
“You have to really be in love with the guy to take him at No. 3. So really all the options are still open for us,” Mayo told reporters at the annual NFL meetings on March 24.
According to Breer, the Patriots have seemingly “checked every box” when it comes to Maye. Friday’s visit will be the team’s third individual meeting with the quarterback, an indication that Mayo and de facto GM Eliot Wolf are closing in on a decision.
“They met with him at the combine — they did an informal interview with him there, they they went to his pro day — they were one of two teams that was granted an interview with him before the pro day… this would be another piece of the process… getting him in your environment,” Breer said.
