The Patriots will sign former Commanders running back Antonio Gibson, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL media.
Gibson rushed for 1,037 yards in 2021, but his playing time had diminished over the last few seasons. He made two starts last year, tallying 65 carries for 265 yards and a touchdown last season.

The former University of Memphis standout is a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield. He had more receiving yards (389) and receiving touchdowns (2) than rushing yards and touchdowns last season. Gibson played both receiver and running back in college.
Listed at 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, Gibson will bring size to the Patriots’ backfield which already features Rhamondre Stevenson.
He’ll also bring speed. He ran a 4.39 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine and was recognized as AAC co-special teams player of the year for his work as a return specialist in college.
Ezekiel Elliott, who became the Patriots’ leading rusher last season after Stevenson was injured, is a free agent.
