The Patriots still have major questions to answer regarding the team’s roster, but at least one piece appears to be falling (back) into place.
Tight end Hunter Henry, who led New England last season with six touchdown catches, has reportedly agreed to re-sign on a three-year deal worth $27 million (with a maximum value of $30 million), according to NFL reporters Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.
Henry, 29, originally signed with the Patriots in 2021 on an initial three-year deal. In that time, he’s recorded 133 receptions for 1,531 yards and 17 touchdowns.
He was having a productive 2023, and appeared as if he might end up being the team’s leading receiver, but a knee injury in December caused him to miss the final three games.
Beyond statistics, Henry has served as one of the team’s captains, and is seen as a leader.
His return would help solidify his position for New England, especially as fellow tight ends (and 2023 teammates) Mike Gesicki and Pharaoh Brown are also free agents.
Alternative options might have proven thin based on the currently projected free agent and draft classes. Should the Patriots opt to draft a quarterback, Henry’s presence could help improve a rookie’s comfort level as a dependable underneath passing option.
