Patriots plan on meeting with 3 top QB prospects at NFL Combine

"I think it’s a really good year for quarterbacks."

Patriots director of scouting Eliot Wolf spoke to reporters on Tuesday during the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, touching on a variety of subjects — including New England’s hopes for a culture change, free agents, and talent evaluation.

As for New England’s plans for the 2024 NFL Draft — especially in regards to their No. 3 overall pick — Wolf opted to keep things close to his chest, speaking more in generalities rather than honing in on some of the intriguing, blue-chip prospects that should be available when New England lands on the clock in late April.

But Wolf did reveal one important nugget of information in Indy as it pertains to the top quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL draft class.

The Patriots will meet with the top three quarterbacks available — USC’s Caleb Williams, LSU’s Jayden Daniels, and UNC’s Drake Maye — during the scouting combine, according to Nicole Yang of The Boston Globe,

While the NFL combine offers an opportunity to gauge the skillset of hundreds of prospects through drills and physicals, it also serves as an avenue for teams to meet one-on-one with players and assess how they fit in with their respective organizations.

Per the latest NFL combine rules established in 2020, the Patriots (and every other NFL team) will be allowed to formally interview 45 prospects during the combine — with each interview lasting 18 minutes.

The Patriots are expected to meet with Daniels on Tuesday evening, according to Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report.

Meeting face-to-face with Williams, Daniels, and Maye stands as the best available path forward for the Patriots at this stage of the NFL offseason calendar.

All three quarterbacks will sit out of throwing drills during the combine — with the trio likely waiting until their respective pro days to uncork a few passes in front of scouts and other talent evaluators, The Athletic reported.

Other intriguing 2024 QBs like Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., and Oregon’s Bo Nix are all expected to throw during the combine.

“I think it’s a really good year for quarterbacks,” Wolf said on Tuesday. “It’s a really good year at a lot of positions. Like any position, we’re going to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses and determine who fits for us. We’re pretty early in the process here. I haven’t met any of these guys. Jerod hasn’t met any of these guys. As we continue through the process here, we’ll determine what’s best for the team.

“One thing about the quarterbacks specifically that I’m excited about is they all look like they’re really tough guys, which is great at any position but the quarterback position especially.”
