What Drake Maye said about potentially playing for the Patriots in 2024

"That’s what you think of when you think of New England you think of the GOAT, Tom Brady."

If the Patriots opt to take a potential franchise quarterback with the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, either UNC’s Drake Maye or LSU’s Jayden Daniels is expected to be sitting atop the leaderboard when New England lands on the clock.

And while there are still almost two months to go before the start of the 2024 NFL Draft, the prospect of playing in New England is an enticing scenario for Maye.

“New England, I mean, it’s hard not to talk about The Dynasty,” Maye said of playing for the Patriots during an appearance on “The Adam Schefter Podcast”. “You know, you think of the GOAT. That’s what you think of when you think of New England you think of the GOAT, Tom Brady. So, just a place that’s had a lot of success and had some years lately that they haven’t been as successful and looking to get back on track and I know that’s, you know, right there near Boston.”

“Shoot, these are three great sports towns you’re talking about now,” he continued, looping New England in with Washington, D.C. and Chicago. “So, all great places to play and, you know, I think a great spot to be a franchise quarterback at and that’s what I’m working towards. Whoever decides to draft me, I’m ready and excited to get to work.”

There’s no guarantee that Maye will be available at No. 3, especially with both the Chicago Bears (Pick No. 1) and Washington Commanders (No. 2) also potentially targeting quarterbacks on draft day.

But if Maye is still on the board, he might be tough to pass up for a Patriots team in desperate need of an overhaul on offense.

Even though Daniels might boast a higher ceiling as a dynamic, dual-threat QB, Maye projects as a dangerous pocket-passer with a pro-ready frame (6-foot-4, 230 pounds) at the next level. ESPN’s David Pollack called Maye “Justin Herbert 2.0” on College GameDay in November.

During his career with the Tar Heels, Maye threw for 8,018 yards, 63 touchdowns and 16 total interceptions while also rushing for 1,209 yards and 16 scores.
