Will Lawing, who coached tight ends for the Patriots last year, is reportedly planning to leave for Bill O’Brien’s staff at Boston College, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

“Sources: Boston College is working to hire New England Patriots tight end coach Will Lawing as the offensive coordinator,” Thamel wrote on Twitter. “He’s a veteran coach who has worked with Bill O’Brien in New England, Alabama and Houston, where he was TE coach in 2019 and 2020.”

Lawing spent one year on the Patriots’ staff after previous tight ends coach Nick Caley left to join the Rams.

Lawing has worked with O’Brien for more than a decade, making stops at Penn State, Alabama, the Houston Texans, and the Patriots. He has been a tight ends coach for most of his career, with some experience as an offensive assistant and quality control coach. Lawing had a brief stints as an offensive coordinator at Division III Juniata College over a decade ago.

Lawing played college football in the ACC at North Carolina, where he spent time as a receiver after earning a spot as a walk on. His father, Brad Lawing, was UNC’s defensive ends coach and recruiting coordinator at the time he walked on in 2004.

The reported departure creates an opening for a tight ends coach on Jerod Mayo’s staff.
