Ravens star blasts Bill Belichick for missing out on coaching job this offseason

“I think that debate can be put to rest now.”

Bill Belichick may not have the biggest fan in Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey.

The former All-Pro defensive back took to social media on Thursday shortly after news broke that the Washington Commanders hired former Cowboys DC Dan Quinn as their new coach.

With Quinn’s hiring, every head-coaching vacancy in the NFL this offseason has been filled — meaning that Bill Belichick is presumably out of a job for the 2024 campaign. It’s a surprising development for the future Hall-of-Fame head coach, even with the lackluster returns put forth by the 2023 Patriots.

But based on Humphrey’s online musings, the sight of Belichick being on the outside looking in at a head-coaching gig this winter stands as a stark indictment.

The “ greatest coach of All time” did not get hired out of 6 Head Coaching jobs open,” Humphrey posted on X. “I think that debate can be put to rest now.”

It’s a harsh critique doled out by Humphrey, considering the lofty resume that Belichick has crafted over the years. Of course, the “debate” that Humphrey is alluding to centers around Belichick and Tom Brady and their respective roles in New England’s two-decade dynasty.

Since Brady left Foxborough in March 2020 to sign with the Buccaneers, the Patriots are nine games under .500 and have only advanced to the postseason once in four years.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft was asked about Belichick and Brady’s impact on New England’s success and who warrants more credit last month.

“It’s not the first time I’ve heard that question, but why I love the NFL and why I think it’s great for young people to play in it – it’s a great lesson in life,” Kraft noted. “Because, I don’t think there’s anything else, any other sport or any other experience that’s as team-based and collective-based as football, and I don’t think either one of those two would have accomplished what they accomplished if they weren’t together.

“I think they’re both the best at their professions, and we were lucky to have them together for two decades.”

This is not the first time that Humphrey has criticized Belichick and his perceived lesser role in crafting New England’s dynasty.

During his “Punch Line” podcast released in September 2023, Humphrey once again credited Brady as the primary architect of New England’s six titles.

“Is Belichick elite, or is Tom Brady elite?” Humphrey asked. “That’s the million-dollar question. It’s looking more like Brady. But it is what it is. … I sound like a Belichick hater right now. I feel like I’m Asante Samuel right now because he’s a super Belichick hater. … If this year still goes down, is that three losing seasons or two?”
