Jerry Jones said there’s ‘no doubt’ he’d be able to work with Bill Belichick
“I know him personally and I like him,” Jones said. “There’s no doubt in my mind we could work together.”
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he’s friends with Bill Belichick and wouldn’t have a problem working with him one day.
The Cowboys aren’t in position to hire Belichick as head coach at the moment, but Jones told Yahoo! Sports’ Jori Epstein that he believes the pair could get along.
“I know him personally and I like him,” Jones said. “There’s no doubt in my mind we could work together. None. None.”
The Cowboys do not have a vacancy for a head coach because they retained Mike McCarthy after a loss to the Green Bay Packers in the wild card playoff round.
The Cowboys have gone 12-5 in each of the past three seasons under McCarthy. But, they’ve never made it past the divisional round with him as head coach.
Before the Cowboys announced that McCarthy would keep his job, there was speculation that the team was interested in hiring Belichick.
Perhaps Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl champion head coach, could have been the piece to put the Cowboys over the top, some would argue.
“We all know that he’s certainly excellent, maybe at the top of his profession,” Jones said. “To say that any one person automatically assures you a Super Bowl is ridiculous. That’s too high [an] expectation for him. But is he maybe the greatest pro football coach of all time? Could very well be.”
Belichick, who will turn 72 this April, has reportedly interviewed for one coaching job since parting ways with the Patriots earlier this month. The Atlanta Falcons decided to go in a different direction, hiring Raheem Morris instead.
Seattle and Washington are the only teams left with head coaching vacancies.
Jones said that he didn’t want to speculate whether Belichick would get another opportunity in the NFL. He said the Cowboys’ offensive performance, which led the league in scoring, was part of the reason he chose to keep McCarthy.
“His work with Dak, his work in the offense was really good,” Jones said. “I feel and he feels, we all feel, that there’s notably more to do improving with Dak. Best way to get the meat that’s on the bone is continuity.”
