Two more coaches linked to Patriots’ vacant offensive coordinator position

The decision, per an NFL insider, could come as soon as this week.

As Jerod Mayo settles into his new role as head coach of the Patriots, the team continues to explore possible options at the currently vacant position of offensive coordinator.

Former offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is set to depart for an equivalent role at Ohio State. Given the team’s struggles on offense in 2023, there is even more emphasis on Mayo and the Patriots to make the right appointment.

According to NFL reporter Albert Breer, two more names were recently added to the already voluminous list of potential candidates: Scott Turner (a Raiders passing game coordinator) and Klint Kubiak (a 49ers passing game coordinator).

That brings the number of coaches linked to the vacant role up to 11. The list of coaches who have already (or are expected to imminently) interview includes Nick Caley (the Rams’ tight ends coach), Kubiak and Brian Fleury (both 49ers assistants), Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Engtrand, and Shane Waldron (former Seahawks offensive coordinator who has since been hired in the same role by the Bears).

In addition, the Patriots have been linked to former Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, Zac Robinson (formerly of the Rams, since hired by the Falcons), Dan Pitcher (a Bengals assistant who is staying in Cincinnati), Jerrod Johnson of the Texans, and Thomas Brown of the Panthers.

The decision will inevitably have huge consequences in normal terms of how the offensive runs, but also when considering the Patriots hold the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The selection of an offensive coordinator will help establish which type of player Mayo and New England leadership might end up deciding on.

As for the timing on when the staff will be complete, it could come soon.

“My guess is the Patriots will have most of the big hires wrapped up this week,” Breer predicted.
