Morning sports update: Nick Caserio ‘likely’ bound for Texans role in 2020
Caserio has been with the Patriots since 2001.
The Patriots face the Jets at MetLife Stadium tonight (8:15 p.m.) on Monday Night Football. New England (6-0) tries to sweep its slate of 2019 games against New York (1-4).
The Bruins are back at TD Garden on Tuesday to face the Maple Leafs, who defeated Boston on Saturday in Toronto, 4-3.
And the Celtics get the regular season underway on Wednesday night in Philadelphia against the 76ers. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
Nick Caserio reportedly set to leave Patriots after 2019 season: Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio was blocked from leaving New England over the summer, but might have a clear exit open after the current season.
According to CBS’ Jason La Confora, Caserio likely won’t sign a contract extension with the Patriots. La Canfora said the odds of a new deal are “beyond slim.” Additionally, it “remains very likely” that Caserio will join the Texans in the offseason “in a prominent role.”
Houston pursued the longtime Patriots executive in the offseason, but halted efforts after New England filed tampering chargers in June.
Caserio, 43, has been with the Patriots since 2001 and has been in his current role since 2008. His versatility has long been praised, and its clear that the Texans — with former Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien as head coach — want to further the Belichick ties in the team’s organization.
Trivia: The last time the Patriots played the Jets on Monday Night Football was in 2010. New England won 45-3. Who led the team in receiving yards in that game?
(Answer at the bottom).
Hint: He played for Chadron State in college, and totaled a career high 80 receptions with the Chargers in 2015.

On this day: In 2007, Coco Crisp ran down the final out of the American League Championship Series in Game 7 as the Red Sox completed another comeback (this time rallying from a 3-1 series deficit against Cleveland). Boston won the game 11-2, and would win the World Series in a 4-0 sweep over the Rockies.
