Morning sports update: Josh Gordon reportedly avoided a ‘major injury’ on Thursday night

The report is "good news for the Patriots," according to Ian Rapoport.

The Patriots took some time to build a lead over the Giants, but eventually overwhelmed New York by a 35-14 final score. Tom Brady rushed for two touchdowns and the defense continued its dominance.

The Bruins suffered their first loss of the new season, falling 4-2 to the Avalanche in Colorado.

In national news, the Washington Mystics defeated the Connecticut Sun 89-78 to win the WNBA title. It was Washington’s first championship in team history.

And the Astros advanced to play the Yankees in the American League Championship Series with a 6-1 win in the decisive Game 5 over the Rays.

The latest on Josh Gordon: The talented Patriots wide receiver suffered a scary moment as he tried to tackle Giants defensive end Markus Golden following a fumble recovery by the New York defense. Gordon’s knee twisted and it looked like a potentially scary injury.

On Friday morning, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Gordon escaped serious injury.

“The good news for the Patriots though is Josh Gordon was spotted in the second half riding the bike,” said Rapoport. “That indicates one, he has a chance to come back. He ultimately did not, but he had a chance. And two, that it is not a major injury for Josh Gordon.”

Given that Phillip Dorsett was also out on Thursday with a hamstring injury, it left the Patriots thin at the wide receiver position. New England finished the game with limited options at skill positions.
