Morning sports update: Tom Brady talked about the success of Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett

The 49ers crushed the Browns on Monday Night Football, 31-3. A dominant defense and a thundering running game helped San Francisco move to 4-0 on the season.

Also on Monday, the Yankees beat the Twins 5-1 to sweep the first round series and advance to the American League Championship Series (where New York will play either the Astros or Rays).

And ahead of the Patriots’ Thursday matchup with the Giants, it appears that New York may once again be without star running back Saquon Barkley:

Tom Brady praised the success of former backups: During his weekly appearance on Westwood One radio, Tom Brady was asked who his best backup was during his time with the Patriots.

“That’s a tough question,” said Brady. The question came in reference to Jimmy Garoppolo’s impending Monday Night Football game (which the 49ers easily won to move to 4-0). Brady mentioned Garappolo, who the Patriots drafted in the second round in 2014.

“You know when Jimmy was with me, he was very young,” Brady explained. “It was his rookie year. He got a great opportunity with the 49ers. He’s still really trying to establish himself and his career. But everything that he’s done has been very exceptional.”

Of course, Garoppolo isn’t the only member of Brady’s old “wolf pack” to be an NFL starter (and leading his team to high-profile wins). The Colts, led by Jacoby Brissett, upset the favored Chiefs on Sunday night.

“Jacoby Brissett, look what he’s done,” Brady noted. “Goes to the Chiefs and last night and wins a game. Matt Cassel had an incredible career, Brian Hoyer’s backing up Jacoby Brissett. There’s just been a lot of great guys that I’ve played with that are still all my great friends.”

Though he’s one of the most competitive players in the NFL, Brady said that he enjoys watching the success of his friends.

“I watch them and I cheer for them each week, and we exchange texts and emails,” Brady explained. “Again, I think what matter most to me is relationships, the brotherhood that I have with all these guys. You share this room, it’s a very intimate room, and we’re all competitors and we all want to play. The guys that move on to other teams, I can see things that we talked about that carry over to other teams. It’s just a great feeling, and I’ll be buddies with these guys for the rest of my life.”

Trivia: Who the last Patriots wide receiver to record at least 1,000 receiving yards in a regular season?

(Answer at the bottom).

Hint: He won the Fred Biletnikoff Award in his final college season after making 128 catches for 1,730 and 16 touchdowns.

Dwayne Haskins gave Tom Brady a Twitter shoutout: Haskins referenced Michigan as “ttun,” meaning “that team up north.”

Marcus Morris was ejected from a preseason NBA game: The former Celtic was tossed for hitting Justin Anderson in the head with the basketball. Morris said after, “If this was the regular season, I wouldn’t have done that.”

However, he added that the move was motivated partly because the Knicks are “not taking no shit.”

On this day: In 1995, Mariners Hall of Fame slugger Edgar Martinez’s double down the left field line allowed Ken Griffey Jr. to race from second base all the way home to win the American League Division Series against the Yankees.

Daily highlight: Vince Carter’s still got it.
