According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski, who was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday, has a left hip injury that will require season-ending surgery. He is expected to return next season, according to Schefter.

Schefter also reports that the Patriots are leaning toward two kickers to replace him — Kai Forbath and Mike Nugent. According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, Forbath appeared in the team’s kicker workouts on Wednesday, as did rookie kicker Matthew Wright from the University of Central Florida.

Gostkowski, who was drafted by the team in the fourth round in 2006, has made seven of eight field goals this season, but has struggled on extra points – 11 of 15. He took responsibility for missing his fourth extra point of the season in Sunday’s game against the Bills, saying, “I’m just not very consistent right now.”
