The New England Revolution clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2015 with a thrilling 2-0 win over the Eastern Conference’s top team, New York City FC. Argentinian forward Gustavo Bou capped the postseason-qualifying win with a sumptuous chip of New York goalkeeper Sean Johnson.

Also on Sunday, the Patriots defeated the Bills in Buffalo, 16-10. The matchup of two undefeated teams turned into a defensive struggle, with New England sealing the win late in the fourth quarter after linebacker Jamie Collins “almost fair caught” the Patriots’ fourth interception of the day.

And the Red Sox won the team’s 2019 finale 5-4 over the Orioles, with Mookie Betts scoring from first on a walk-off base hit to right field.

Kyle Van Noy heard Dion Dawkins: Before the Patriots-Bills clash on Sunday, Buffalo offensive lineman Dion Dawkins made it clear that he was only focused on his team, and not New England’s league-leading defense.

“It’s really all about us,” said Dawkins on Wednesday before the game. “We don’t care what they’ve done the games before because they haven’t played us yet. Once they play us and if it doesn’t change then that’s when y’all could start talking.”

After the Patriots forced four interceptions and sacked Bills quarterbacks five times to extend the team’s record to 4-0, New England linebacker Kyle Van Noy responded to Dawkins.

“Just wanted to make sure Dawkins knew who we were,” Van Noy said.

Of course, Dawkins’s full remarks weren’t exactly a trash-talking of the Patriots. He also said, “I love 12 [Tom Brady], and I respect his game and [as a] player.”

Still, Van Noy has used criticism in the past — whether intended or otherwise — as motivation before.

“If someone said they didn’t know who you are after what we’ve been doing,” Van Noy explained, “would you be like, ‘What have you been watching?'”

Minshew magic continued on Sunday: After helping the Jaguars to a 26-24 win over the Broncos on Sunday, quarterback Gardner Minshew continues to make a unique impression on the rest of the NFL, including his own teammates.

“He’s stronger than you think,” said Jacksonville running back Leonard Fournette. “I don’t know if the mustache gives him power or what.”

On this day: In 1962, the Mets lost to the Cubs 5-1 in what should have been an utterly forgettable end-of-season game. However, the circumstances made it notable. While the Cubs were a 103-loss team — a feat normally bad enough to achieve last place — Chicago was historically eclipsed by the team they defeated that day. The Mets, finishing out the team’s inaugural season in Major League Baseball, finished a modern record 120 losses.

The UPI’s description of the game, which appeared in the next day’s Boston Globe, summed up the hapless Mets:

The Cubs scored on a bases loaded walk, a wild pitch, and a pair of errors and completed a rare triple play yesterday to win their 59th game, 5-1, and hand the Mets their 120th loss.
