The news comes a day after the team officially acquired wide receiver Antonio Brown.
Thomas, 31, signed a one-year contract with the Patriots in April. He spent much of the offseason recovering from a torn Achilles suffered in Week 16 as a member of the Houston Texans last season. Thomas was removed from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list at the end of August, and caught seven passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns in New England’s preseason finale.
Leading up to the season opener, Thomas remained limited in practice. His status was questionable and eventually downgraded to inactive before kickoff Sunday.
The Patriots’ wide receiver depth chart now features Julian Edelman, Brown, Josh Gordon, Phillip Dorsett, Jakobi Meyers, and Gunner Olszewski, with rookie N’Keal Harry on injured reserve and able to return after Week 8.
