Morning sports update: Julian Edelman talked about what he’s seen from Josh Gordon

"He's a good dude and we're definitely excited to have him. I am excited to have him. He can help us, for sure."

The Red Sox lost to the Twins 2-1 on Thursday night in a shocking ending in which Rafael Devers was thrown out at home plate after an exceptional throw from Minnesota outfielder Eddie Rosario.

The Red Sox are now 6.5 games out of the final American League wild card spot.

Elsewhere, the NFL season got underway as the Packers defeated the Bears 10-3 in a throwback game.

Julian Edelman talked about Josh Gordon and gave a thumb update: Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was asked about teammate Josh Gordon during a recent interview on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show.”

“He’s a very talented player,” Edelman explained. “He’s a great dude. He can bring the heat. This is a guy who is a stud. He’s doing well here right now, I feel. He’s working hard. He’s great in the locker room. He’s a good dude and we’re definitely excited to have him. I am excited to have him. He can help us, for sure.”

Gordon arrived in training camp after being reinstated by the NFL on Aug. 16. In a short span of time, he’s been preparing for the regular season. Edelman was asked if he thinks Gordon will immediately contribute in the regular season.

“I think our training staff and our strength staff has been doing as much as they can to get him to where he needs to be,” said the 33-year-old receiver. “That is a question you’d have to ask him. He was working out before. We got him in there, so my focus is more on what I have to do and I think he’s going to be fine.”

Additionally, Edelman was asked for an update on his thumb, which he broke before training camp.

“It’s a thumbs up, man,” Edelman said. “Thumbs up.”

Tom Brady is under no illusions about his longevity: In his weekly interview with Westwood One Radio’s Jim Gray, 42-year-old Tom Brady was asked about his future.

“Whatever anybody wants to look forward to, they certainly can,” said Brady. “That doesn’t mean that I have to do that. I’m in a very unique situation. To play 20 years in the NFL is a blessing for me, and I think I’m really relishing and enjoying everything that’s happened this season. And I don’t think you can ever take it for granted that, ‘Oh, I’ll be able to play as many years as I want.’ I’ve just been so fortunate.”

“I certainly have goals to play beyond this year,” Brady continued. “But at the same time, it’s a contact sport, and any game could be a player’s last game. So I’m not putting any energy into anything beyond this season. I owe it to my team to give everything I can physically, mentally, emotionally to this season, and that’s where 100 percent of my focus will be.”

The unofficial call-up of Bobby Dalbec: Red Sox third baseman Bobby Dalbec is with the Red Sox, only he isn’t. That’s the strange reality for the team’s latest prospect who is currently with the Major League team even though he isn’t on the official roster. With no real place for him in the current lineup, he’s just with the team to get acclimated. But that’s a good sign for his — and the team’s — future. [The Athletic]

On this day: In 1995, Cal Ripken Jr. broke Lou Gehrig’s record for consecutive games played with an astounding 2,131.

On the same day in 1995 (though completely unrelated), Colombian goalkeeper René Higuita showed off his famous “scorpion” clearance in a friendly against England. It remains one of the most iconic — if wildly unnecessary — goalkeeper moves in soccer history.

Daily highlight: Canadian Bianca Andreescu, just 19 years old, advanced to the final of the U.S. Open with a thrilling win on Thursday night. Her opponent in the final will be Serena Williams.
