How Boston newscasts covered the Patriots’ Super Bowl victory
The stations interviewed everyone from the players to the weary fans landing at Logan Airport.
During the celebrations on Boston Common after the Patriots’ Super Bowl victory, a young man climbed a light pole and tried to knock out the lamp on top. Police swarmed the pole and pulled the man down, then an officer grabbed him by the shirt.
“What gives you the right to break city property?” the officer asked, per NBC10’s Perry Russom. “Nothing. You’re a moron.”
Russom, reporting live from the Common, wrote down the quote to ensure he could accurately deliver it to those watching the merriment from the comfort of their couch.
The Boston television stations provided wall-to-wall coverage of Super Bowl 53, interviewing everyone from the players and owner to the weary fans landing back at Logan Airport Monday morning.
WCVB’s Maria Stephanos talked to Patriots owner Robert Kraft on a confetti-coated Mercedes-Benz Stadium field.
“This is one of the great Foxboro residents,” Kraft said of Stephanos.
The longtime local television reporter relayed that her neighbors back home were going crazy as fireworks burst in the sky. Kraft noted that police chiefs in the area let their officers wear Patriots hats all week.
“I think all that good karma helped us,” Kraft said. “The people in Foxboro have welcomed us and been so great. A lot of good things are still going to happen in Foxboro. We’ll look forward to unveiling that championship banner.”
Elsewhere on the field, WBZ-TV’s Steve Burton and Dan Roche were catching up with Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman.
“You talk about Tom Brady having the clutch gene,” Burton told Edelman. “You have that same clutch gene. You realize that, don’t you?”
“It’s a quarterback thing,” the wide receiver answered with a smile.
Roche reminded Edelman that he has a parade to attend and asked him to tell the audience back in New England what he expects on Tuesday.
“I expect two mill. Two million people,” Edelman said. “We just got six. We just got six! Let’s go!”
The Patriots fans who made the trip to Atlanta will need to catch up on sleep before the Duck Boats start rolling. Boston 25’s Julie Leonardi was at Logan Airport in the early hours Monday to greet fans returning from Georgia. One red-eye flight left Atlanta at 2 a.m and landed in Boston just before 5 a.m.
“We didn’t go to sleep,” one fan said. “We just went right from the stadium to the airport.”
Another man in Patriots gear reported that everyone on the plane was asleep.
“I really kind of thought we’d have a few people that still had a few ‘Go Pats’ around. But no, we were all pretty dead on the flight, so it was pretty awesome.”
