Melifonwu, who visited with the club two Fridays ago, was released by the Oakland Raiders on Oct. 23. The 24-year-old is from Grafton and played for Connecticut from 2012-16.
A freakish athlete who tore up the NFL Combine, Melifonwu was drafted 56th overall last year and played five games as a rookie before going on injured reserve because of a knee injury. He then underwent hip surgery that ended his season.
The Raiders waived him in August this year, but he wasn’t claimed and landed on injured reserve again. The club released him two months later.
At the 2017 combine, Melifonwu recorded a 4.40-second 40-yard dash, a 44-inch vertical jump, and a 141-inch broad jump, all of which were tops among safeties.
