How to earn Tom Brady’s trust, according to James White
The players striving to break into the Patriots offense this season would do well to heed James White’s advice. The running back so fully earned Tom Brady’s trust that No. 12 wanted to give White the Super Bowl MVP award he collected in 2017.
“White is like my oldest son,” Brady said after White set a Super Bowl record for receptions (14) in that comeback victory. “He just does everything right and you can never get mad at him because even if he doesn’t make the play, he feels worse about it than you do. He’s just the best teammate.”
On Monday, White explained what new Patriots have to do to earn a similar level of faith from Brady during an appearance on WEEI’s “Dale & Keefe.”
“Just try to learn the offense as fast as possible,” White said. “Try not to make the same mistakes, and when you get those reps, show everyone you can do those things and do them at a high level every time. It’s just consistency, doing the right thing over and over and over again…that’s what it’s all about.”
With all the departures — Danny Amendola, Dion Lewis, Brandin Cooks — and additions — Sony Michel, Eric Decker, Jeremy Hill — to the Patriots offense, White can’t be sure where the coaching staff will use him this season. However, the 26-year-old is ready to “do whatever the coaches need me to do.”
“One week it may be two catches and block the whole game,” he said. “The next it might be ten catches, no carries so you don’t really know how the game is going to go. I accept my role every week and try to execute to the best of my abilities.”
Who has a better case for AL MVP, Mookie Betts or J.D. Martinez?: Mookie Betts has produced 8.1 Wins Above Replacement already this season. J.D. Martinez has delivered 5.6 WAR. However, Chad Finn explains why the race for MVP isn’t that simple. (Boston.com)
An Eagles fan is trolling the Patriots with a billboard near Gillette Stadium:
A Philadelphia Eagles fan purchased an electronic billboard ad on Route 1 near Gillette Stadium that exults in the Eagles’ Super Bowl win over the Pats in February. The company that owns the billboard said, “business is business, right?” (Boston.com)
Bill Belichick isn’t budging on questions about Malcolm Butler: The Patriots coach was once again asked about his decision to bench Butler in Super Bowl LII, but refused to shed any light on the move.
“Really what I’m focused on this year is training camp, trying to get the 2018 team better — not some other year, some other game, something that happened last year, five years ago, 20 years ago,” Belichick said. (Boston.com)
