The Patriots donned pads for the first time in training camp on Saturday, and the familiar sound of contact returned to the football field.

In front of another packed crowd in Foxborough, the Patriots continued to ramp up preparation for the upcoming season. Here are a few observations from the day:

Deatrich Wise let everyone know the pads were on: Shedding the block of rookie offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn (who was in his first NFL rep in pads), defensive lineman Deatrich Wise knocked running back Jeremy Hill backward off his feet. Later, Wise dominated guard Nate Theaker in a drill, again showcasing his explosiveness.

Duron Harmon made a pair of interceptions: While the odds are generally stacked against defensive backs in the passing drills (as quarterbacks frequently have almost unlimited time to throw), safety Duron Harmon still came up with two interceptions. The first came against Brian Hoyer, with the second coming against Tom Brady as the latter sought to find Rob Gronkowski in the end zone.

The day’s injuries: Cornerback Keion Crossen exited practice walking slowly with trainers, while defensive lineman Trey Flowers also left early with a towel pressed to his face after making a tackle with Malcom Brown in a goal-line drill.

Sony Michel up and down: Rookie first-round pick Sony Michel combined success with a frustrating mistake on Saturday. The running back fumbled in a drill, but also scored in a goal-line situation by means of effective extra effort. Hoyer, who quarterbacked the play, was noticeably excited for the rookie.

Tom Brady doesn’t want to talk about Alex Guerrero and Julian Edelman: Brady spoke to reporters following practice. When asked about the suspension of Julien Edelman in relation to Brady’s personal trainer Alex Guerrero, Brady answered, “I have no comment. It’s just ridiculous.”

He promptly told reporters, “I’m out, see you guys” and left the press conference.
