Would you want the Patriots to trade for Odell Beckham Jr.?
Welcome to Boston.com’s Sports Q, our daily conversation, initiated by you and moderated by Chad Finn, about a compelling topic in Boston sports. Here’s how it works: You submit questions to Chad through Twitter, Facebook, email, his Friday chat, and any other outlet you prefer. Seems like ESPN is trying to stir up Odell Beckham Jr. trade rumors. If there’s anything to them, should Bill Belichick trade for him if the price is reasonable? – Steve N.
Well, I don’t think ESPN is stirring anything up here – it seems like a legitimate possibility. Giants owner John Mara said over the weekend that no one is untouchable, and Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network was the first reporter I saw to write that Beckham won’t report to camp without a contract extension. It actually would make some sense to move him. Maybe a lot of sense.
From @gmfb: My understanding is that #Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr will not set foot on a field without a new contract extension agreed to — with the #Giants or any team. … This comes a day after owner John Mara said no one is “untouchable” in trade talks.

But should the Patriots be interested? At a basic level, it’s price dependent. If the Giants want him gone so badly that they’d deal him for a third-round pick or something like that, absolutely.
Similar low-risk, high-reward deals for elite, complicated players such as Corey Dillon and Randy Moss have worked out extremely well for the Patriots through the years. And when their skills diminished and/or they became a nuisance, Bill Belichick was quick to move on.
Even with the drama surrounding the Patriots this past season that led to questions about whether their team culture was as stable as it traditionally has been, taking on a supremely talented pain-in-the-neck isn’t going to sink them. Heck, they were interested in Michael Bennett, right?
But you and I know it’s highly unlikely that the Giants make Beckham someone else’s trade bargain. For all of his baggage, he’s an exceptional wide receiver, and some team would probably pay a steep price to acquire him. Jon Gruden seems to be collecting every player he has heard of over the last five years out in Oakland, and Beckham fits the Raiders mold. If the Giants want to trade him, they’ll have real option.
To actually answer the question, sure, I’d be cool with the Patriots trading for him if the price is reasonable. But I’d be shocked if it happens, because the price isn’t going to be reasonable. And that’s all well and good. The timing just isn’t right, and from what I understand, the Patriots’ kicking nets are all spoken for anyway.
But what do you guys think? Would you want the Patriots to trade for Odell Beckham Jr.? I’ll hear you in the comments or join the conversation on Facebook.
