Patriots release tight end Martellus Bennett

The news came shortly after Bennett's brother was traded to the Eagles.

Michael Bennett isn’t the only member of the Bennett family on the move.

The Patriots announced Wednesday evening that they are releasing tight end Martellus Bennett, ending his brief second stint with the team. ESPN’s Field Yates first reported the move Wednesday afternoon.

Bennett, who won a Super Bowl in his first year with the Patriots, had rejoined the team midseason last November after being cut by the Green Bay Packers. He was placed on injured reserve after playing two games for New England. The 30-year-old had previously announced plans to retire after the 2017 season, but reportedly wanted to keep playing as of last month and would have been owed a $2 million roster bonus next Wednesday.

The news of Bennett’s release Wednesday came roughly two hours after reports that his older brother, Michael, a three-time Pro-Bowl defensive end, had been traded by the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.
