Matt Patricia is reportedly ‘likely’ to land Lions job

The morning after he led the Patriots’ defense to an impressive playoff showing vs. the Titans, a report has emerged that defensive coordinator Matt Patricia will “likely’’ be the next coach of the Detroit Lions.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that contract details still need to be worked out, but “you could slot Matt Patricia in in Detroit.”

Patricia, who has been with the Patriots since 2004 and in his current post since 2012, was considered to be the frontrunner to land the Giants post, according to reports from the New York Daily News and Newsday. He interviewed for the Giants and Lions positions during New England’s bye week.

Bob Quinn, the Lions’ general manager, previously worked in the Patriots’ player personnel department.

A native of Sherrill, N.Y., Patricia was an offensive lineman at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. He began his coaching career there as well, before making stops at Amherst College and Syracuse.

Patricia’s counterpart in New England, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, is also under consideration for head coaching jobs. McDaniels is one of two finalists for the Colts’ vacancy and is considered the favorite.
