‘All signs pointing’ to Giants hiring Matt Patricia as head coach, report says
Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is the front-runner for the New York Giants head coaching vacancy, according to a report by the New York Daily News.
Patricia, who has been with the Patriots since 2004, interviewed with the Giants, Lions, and Cardinals last week and had been considered a favorite to take over in Detroit, where he would work with general manager Bob Quinn, the former Patriots executive.
But the Daily News reported Wednesday that “all signs are pointing’’ to Patricia taking over the reins in New York and that “there are indications he prefers the Giants to the Lions.’’
Although the Giants and Patricia cannot make any type of formal agreement until the Patriots season is over, the spot essentially can be held for him, as the Falcons did with Dan Quinn and more recently the 49ers did with Kyle Shanahan.
If the Patriots advance to the Super Bowl, the Giants can again interview Patricia during the bye week between the conference championship and the title game.
“The Giants are conducting their sixth and final interview with former Broncos RB coach Eric Studesville on Wednesday, but the feeling is Patricia and the Giants may have found themselves a perfect match,’’ the Daily News’s Pat Leonard wrote.
In New York, Patricia would work with newly hired general manager Dave Gettleman, who most recently helped revive the Carolina Panthers.
If Patricia does go to the Giants, watch out for Texans assistant and former Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel in Detroit. The Lions want a defensive coach, and Vrabel knows Quinn from their Patriots days.
