Tom Brady and the Patriots’ offense thrived in Denver on Sunday night, while the defense continued its streak of improved play. Yet the standout unit in New England’s fifth straight win was its special teams.

Special teams plays were crucial in establishing an early lead, and the Patriots never looked back against the Broncos.

Here’s a quick look at the various special teams highlights from New England’s decisive 41-16 victory:

After the Broncos’ defense started well – forcing a three-and-out on the game’s opening drive – the Patriots pounced on a fumbled punt return. The momentum shifted dramatically back in New England’s favor:

The Patriots struck only two plays later, with running back Rex Burkhead hauling in a Brady touchdown pass.

Later in the first quarter, Dion Lewis took a kickoff back 103 yard for a touchdown:

The Patriots continued to leverage a special teams edge in the second quarter when Burkhead burst through on fourth down to block a punt:

In the second half, another mistake from Denver’s special teams led directly to points for the Patriots. Having finally forced Brady and the New England offense off the field, the Broncos were caught with 12 men on the field during the ensuing punt.

The five-yard penalty on a 4th and 2 meant it was a Patriots first down. Seven plays later, Brady found James White for the score to cap a 94-yard touchdown drive:

The versatility of Patriots running backs was on full display, as both Burkhead and Lewis scored touchdowns on offense while also making impacts on special teams.
