The Patriots are coming off of their bye week, but head coach Bill Belichick is showing no rust when it comes to fielding questions from the media.
During a press conference on Wednesday — amid the reports surrounding the relationship between Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady — a reporter asked Belichick if his current goal is to retire with Brady as his starting quarterback. Utilizing one of his classic techniques, the seven-time Super Bowl champion deflected the topic to this week’s game.
“Our goal right now is to beat Denver,” Belichick responded.
After the curt response, the reporter decided to cut his losses and move onto to a different topic – ESPN’s trailer for an upcoming “30 for 30” program about Belichick and former Patriots head coach Bill Parcells.
He asked: “Who do you think has been better over the years at putting the media in its place? You or Bill Parcells?
Belichick’s reply was no different.
“Denver. Denver’s the target this week,” he said. “Right now we’re just focused on Denver. Sorry we can’t connect on that.”
As many Patriots fans and reporters know, diverting responses is nothing new for Belichick. But the head coach’s recent antics have offered shades of him in peak form from previous years — riffing off the classic “We’re onto Cincinnati” line.
