Morning sports update: Jimmy Garoppolo says he talked with Tom Brady after trade
The Dodgers forced a Game 7 in the World Series on Tuesday night, rallying to defeat the Astros 3-1 in Game 6. Elsewhere, Georgia was surprisingly placed atop the first College Football Playoff rankings, beating out Alabama.
Here’s a look at a few of the stories from around the sports world:
Jimmy Garoppolo offered details regarding his New England departure: Speaking in his introductory press conference with the San Francisco 49ers, Jimmy Garoppolo thanked the Kraft family and his former teammates in New England. He also offered this when asked about Tom Brady:
“I actually didn’t even get to the facility. So, I didn’t get to really see anybody in person. But, yeah, [Tom] texted me. We talked for a second.” (Niners Wire)
The Browns reportedly failed to report a trade for A.J. McCarron before NFL trade deadline: At 0-8, things continued to go badly for the Browns in 2017 season when, at the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday, team executives failed to send trade information to the league on time. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bengals beat the trade deadline, sending information to the league regarding a trade of quarterback A.J. McCarron. The Browns did not.
“According to Schefter, the Bengals notified the league of the proposed trade at 3:55 p.m. ET, and the Browns notified the league shortly after 4 p.m. ET. Because the Browns were late, the league denied the trade.” (ESPN)
The Patriots now turn attention back to college quarterbacks: After trading away both Jacoby Brissett and Jimmy Garoppolo, the Patriots are without an heir apparent to Tom Brady.
That means that part of New England’s draft analysis in 2018 will inevitably include at least an examination of available quarterbacks. (Boston Globe)
David Ortiz backs Alex Cora for success: In a profile for Sports Illustrated about his transition to broadcasting, David Ortiz offered a quick take on Alex Cora, the impending Red Sox manager. Ortiz called him “my boy.”
“He’s a baseball guy. Very smart, man. He’s going to be successful there.” (Sports Illustrated)
Jaylen Brown approves of Gregg Popovich speaking up: After the recent Celtics-Spurs matchup, Jaylen Brown saluted the longtime San Antonio coach for his honesty and public comments.
“First, I want to say I respect Gregg Popovich so much,” Brown said. “Just the comments and stuff he’s made in the media, I respect the hell out of Gregg Popovich just for everything he’s said. And I think he has a great relationship with the players so I tip my hat off to him first.” (MassLive)
