After reports emerged Monday night that Jimmy Garoppolo had been traded to the 49ers, both the Patriots and the 49ers confirmed the deal Tuesday morning.

San Francisco’s general manager John Lynch called the move “a big win” for their organization.

“We are thrilled for Jimmy to join the 49ers family,” he said in a statement. “Jimmy is a player we have researched extensively since Kyle [Shanahan] and I joined the 49ers. I am extremely pleased this came together today, and we think it is a big win for our organization.”

Garoppolo played in 17 games, featuring two starts, over the course of four seasons in New England. He threw five touchdown passes, zero interceptions, and completed 63 of 94 pass attempts.

“Albeit in limited game action, Jimmy has displayed the characteristics and traits that we believe are vital to being a successful quarterback in this league,” Lynch continued. “He has had the rare opportunity to sit and learn from a future Hall of fame quarterback in a championship atmosphere. We look forward to Jimmy joining the team tomorrow and hitting the ground running.”

The 25-year-old is not expected to start in the 49ers’ game against the Cardinals, according to Lynch. He is expected to be introduced in a press conference at Levi’s Stadium later this week.
