Here’s how Lawrence Guy greeted Rob Gronkowski for the first time as a Patriot
Lawrence Guy might be just starting his first season in New England, but the 305-lb defensive tackle already has some history with Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday at Gillette Stadium, Guy said, “You gotta ask him how many times [Arizona State] beat Arizona. That’s it. It’s a big rivalry between his school and my school.”
“We got three or four people here from Arizona State, so when I first saw him, I was like, ‘Hey man. How’d Arizona treat you?” he continued.
Guy played three seasons of football at ASU, while Gronk played two at the University of Arizona. The pair overlapped for two seasons, 2008 and 2009, but Gronkowski missed the latter due to back surgery.
“It’s great seeing [Gronkowski] as a teammate now instead of playing against him,” Guy said.
The rivalry between the two Grand Canyon State teams runs deep, and the NCAA has deemed the Territorial Cup — which is awarded to the winning team each year — the oldest college rivalry trophy in college football.
While Guy claims “the only thing [he] can remember from playing U of A is winning,” his Sun Devils actually lost their 2008 matchup, 31-10. In the game, he recorded three solo tackles and assisted on another, while Gronk caught six passes for 95 total yards and one touchdown.
Arizona also holds the overall head-to-head advantage, 49-40-1.
