Do you care that Tom Brady is visiting the White House when some teammates aren’t?
Debate the answer with Chad Finn and Boston sports fans at The Sports Q.
Welcome to Boston.com’s Sports Q, our daily conversation, initiated by you and moderated by Chad Finn, about a compelling topic in Boston sports. Here’s how it works: You submit questions to Chad through Twitter, Facebook, email, his
Friday chat, and any other outlet you prefer. He’ll pick one each day (except for Saturday) to answer, then we’ll take the discussion to the comments. Chad will stop by several times per day to navigate. But you drive the conversation.
Do you care that Tom Brady is visiting the White House when some of his teammates are not?
Yep, we’re going to need a stronger word besides polarizing to describe how people feel, one way or another, about President Donald Trump’s approach to running the country. We’re all dug in, and I doubt any minds will be changed by arguments from the opposite side, though being the sunny optimist that I am, I hold out hoipe that you’ll surprise me in the comments.
I’m not even sure actions change minds at this point. But by no means am I suggesting that making a point by protesting – or even making a point by going – is a worthless pursuit. It’s a cherished right as an American.
Brady is many things – a dad, a son, a GOAT – but the only time he is a protester is when he’s trying to get a roughing-the-passer flag from a referee. He tries mightily to avoid being outwardly political. But he does not hide his loyalty to friends. He’s Trump’s longtime golf buddy in that ultra-exclusive way of the rich and famous (insert your own illuminati theories here), and he likes the version of the person that he knows.
I don’t blame him for going, and it would probably be a much larger story at this point if he didn’t go. But I also have the utmost respect his current and former teammates who aren’t going – and who are willing to explain why, like Devin McCourty and Chris Long do rather eloquently here:
So I’ll ask you. Do you care that Brady – not to mention Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft, and the other Patriots who will attend – are visiting with President Trump? Are you with McCourty, Long and the others who aren’t going? Or do you not care at all?
I’ll see you in the comments. And let’s try to get along like championship-winning teammates, even if we disagree.
