HOUSTON – The most enduring mantra of Bill Belichick’s tenure is noteworthy for its monosyllabic terseness: “It is what it is.” In 12 letters, five staccato words capture a determination to see things as they are, an unvarnished view of the world, circumstances that cannot be altered.
Yet a document from 47 years ago offers a hint that, while Belichick has long insisted on an unflinching acceptance of that which is beyond his control, his stoic outlook has at times assumed more sonorous forms.
