Tom Brady was emotional on Super Bowl LI “Opening Night” when he referenced his father and his family. When asked why, Brady alluded to a recent difficulty.

“It’s been a challenging year for my family, just for some personal reasons,” he said. “It’ll just be nice having everyone here watching us this weekend. That’s my mom and dad.”

The reason for Brady’s emotion was further explained when Tom Curran of Comcast SportsNet New England reported that Brady’s mother, Galynn, has been dealing with “health issues” for a year and a half.

“My mom hasn’t been to a game this season,” Brady said on Tuesday. “My dad has been to [only] one. It’s very atypical.”

Brady’s mother’s health has improved, according to Curran’s family source. And the Patriots’ quarterback will undoubtedly relish having his family in Houston to watch Super Bowl LI.
