The hardest thing about being Bill Belichick’s son is all the questions about being Bill Belichick’s son

Don’t get caught up on the last name: Steve Belichick is his own person, and he really wants you to know it.

OK, he is also the son of arguably (or inarguably, according to some) the greatest coach in NFL history. But when the Patriots first-year safeties coach is contending with how to keep the Atlanta Falcons receivers in check, he’s having to contend with incessant questioning about what it’s like as Bill Belichick as your dad, as The Ringer’s Kevin Clark reported in a profile Tuesday.

As Clark details, those difficulties only heighten during the spectacle of Super Bowl week.

“What’s the hardest thing about being Bill Belichick’s son?” an unnamed TV reporter asks in one occurrence.

“You having to come over and ask me that question,” the blond-haired 29-year-old reportedly replied. “I’m Steve Belichick. So, that’s the hardest part.”

After four years as a coaching assistant, the younger Belichick was promoted to a full-time position as safeties coach last March. Bill Belichick has said working with his son every day is “really special.”  In July, the Patriots hired Belichick’s other son, Brian, as a scouting assistant. But in Clark’s profile Tuesday, Steve Belichick dismissed any suggestion of in-house nepotism.

“Life isn’t fair. I don’t expect it to be,” he said. “I like to work for everything I get. I’ll always be Bill Belichick’s son to everyone in the media. To the people who really matter, my friends and family, I’m Steve.”
