The Falcons’ offensive coordinator almost lost the Super Bowl game plan at ‘Opening Night’

For Atlanta, a disaster averted.

One of the most top-secret documents in Houston was misplaced on Super Bowl LI’s “Opening Night.” And it left a future NFL head coach panicking.

Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who will become the next head coach of the San Francisco 49ers after the Super Bowl, was left frantically searching for his backpack after interviews on Monday night at Houston’s Minute Maid Park. The contents of his bag included the Falcons’ game plan for Super Bowl LI.

“I’ve got to find it,” Shanahan reportedly said to the USA Today during the search.

Luckily for him, the backpack had simply been taken by accident after an interview with San Francisco Examiner writer Art Spander, who eventually realized his mistake and returned it to NFL security (who returned it to Shanahan).

A potential information leak of super proportions was avoided, as were additional conspiracy theories about the Patriots. Only an hour after Shanahan left his spot during the media time, New England players and personnel occupied the same spot during their own media availability.
