Rob Gronkowski to have back surgery

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is set to have back surgery Friday and will miss the remainder of the regular season, a league source confirmed to the Globe on Thursday.

Gronkowski suffered a herniated disk against the Seahawks Nov. 13, according to reports, and the surgery will take place in Los Angeles. The normal timetable for a return from disk surgery is 6-8 weeks, meaning Gronkowski could return this season if the Patriots make an extended playoff run.
