Morning Sports Update: Patriots reportedly make re-signing Martellus Bennett an ‘offseason priority’
The Patriots (eventually) surged to victory through the rain in San Francisco, on a quiet sports Sunday.
Martellus Bennett an ‘offseason priority’ for Patriots: Tight end Martellus Bennett has impressed in New England, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the team has made re-signing him an ‘offseason priority.’ [NFL Network]
Martellus Bennett notes his ‘diverse portfolio,’ says he’s not worried about possible contract extension: “My money’s good,” Bennett said. “I’m just going through every game and playing football. When they address it, they address it. If they don’t, I’m not really worried about it. I have a diverse portfolio, so I’m not really tripping about that. I’m not really worried about that right now. I’m just trying to make plays and continue to play really good football.” [MassLive]
Josh McDaniels reportedly ‘intent’ on staying with Patriots until Bill Belichick retires: ProFootballTalk reports that Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is not on the NFL Career Development Advisory Panel’s list of potential coaching and GM candidates. An unnamed source tells PFT that McDaniels is ‘intent’ on staying with the team until Bill Belichick retires. McDaniels’ motivation, according to the source, is taking over for Belichick as the next head coach. [ProFootballTalk]
These 15 players with big contracts could be on the move this offseason: As Major League Baseball prepares for an offseason with lots of power-hitters and relievers, there also figures to be a sizable number of trade candidates. In addition to the reported availability of Chris Sale, Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander and Victor Martinez, there is also speculation that Giancarlo Stanton, Joey Votto, Evan Longoria and even Andrew McCutchen could be available. Patriots rack up five sacks against 49ers: The Patriots mustered a decent pass rush against the 49ers on Sunday. Patrick Chung, Malcolm Butler, Dont’a Hightower, Rob Ninkovich and newcomer Kyle Van Noy all registered sacks in the first half. Also present was Trey Flowers, who continues to find his way into the backfield and tackled Colin Kaepernick for a loss. (NESN)
