Ty Law to Patriots defense: ‘You got to have some damn pride’: Speaking yesterday about the Patriots, Ty Law pointed out an important distinction between this team and his own iteration. “It was more of a defensive team,” he said. “And then [Tom] Brady became Brady, but at the time he didn’t have to carry the load.” Law also pointed out that his unit was competitive, filled with leaders who brought intensity and passion to the field, “outspoken, vocal, competitive people”.  (Twitter h/t NESN)

Isaiah Thomas scores 20 points in last 6 minutes to carry Celtics: Thanks to an impressive fourth quarter showing, Isaiah Thomas and the Celtics beat a reeling Mavericks squad 90-83. “I guess I just like that quarter, man,” Thomas said. “Sometimes guys get a little tired and the pressure gets a little tougher for them. I guess I like the pressure… Like I always say, I’ve always been ready to take advantage of my opportunity, and my opportunity is here to try to be great. And I want to be great.” (Boston Globe)

Rick Porcello wins AL Cy Young award: By a very narrow margin (137-132), Rick Porcello edged Justin Verlander as the 2016 American league Cy Young winner. Porcello finished with a career best 3.15 ERA, and 1.01 WHIP, with 5.91 K/BB rate that was the best in baseball, in 223.0 innings pitched. “I don’t think you can put that into words how special that was for me,” he said. “It was hard not to start bawling crying right on the spot. It was an unbelievable feeling.” (Boston Globe)

Ty Law named semi-finalist for Pro-Football Hall of Fame class of 2017: In other Ty Law news, the former Patriots’ cornerback is getting some recognition for his amazing career with his nomination for the Hall of Fame. Law was one of 26 players named as a semi-finalist, and it’s hard to imagine he won’t earn the nod. A first round pick by the team in 1995, Law, of course, went on to win three Super Bowls with the Patriots before concluding his career. (WEEI)
