Many words have been spent on the many reasons for the NFL’s sagging Nielsen ratings this season.

But the Patriots-Seahawks matchup on NBC Sunday night found one way to boost the ratings to great heights for at least one game: Broadcast a compelling, back-and-forth game between two high-quality teams that goes down to the finish.

The formula won’t always be that simple or easy to execute, of course. But NBC has to be thrilled with the ratings outcome for the Seahawks’ 31-24 victory over the Patriots on Sunday Night Football.

According to the network, the game drew a 14.3 overnight rating and a 23 share nationally, its best Week 10 Sunday Night Football ratings since a Patriots-Jets matchup in ’11 (14.5/23). Sunday’s game was up 13 percent from the ratings for last season’s Week 10 SNF game, a Cardinals-Seahawks game (12.6/21).

In Boston, the game earned a 34.9 rating and 54 share. Seattle was the top market (48.2/70), while Providence (26.6/40) was third.
