Morning Sports Update: Patriots aren’t rushing to sign another quarterback

New England has not made plans to bring in their favored signee T.J. Yates.

It looks like either Jacoby Brissett or Jimmy Garoppolo -- or Julian Edelman? -- will take the field on Sunday against Buffalo. Matthew J. Lee/Globe Staff

The Red Sox keep rolling, the Patriots reportedly aren’t rushing out to sign another QB, and Rex Ryan has already started tweaking the Patriots.

All signs point to either Jimmy Garoppolo or Jacoby Brissett playing Sunday:

Rex Ryan wasting no time talking Patriots: ‘If [Bill] Belichick’s planning on playing quarterback, we’re coming after him’: Tyrod Taylor and the Bills may have saved Rex Ryan’s job Sunday, inexplicably beating the powerhouse Cardinals. Ryan, of course, had the Patriots on his mind just moments after upsetting the preseason NFC favorite, and commented about the continued quarterback confusion in New England, in his favorite form of discourse – jokes. Jets lose, Patriots guaranteed 1st place in AFC East when Brady returns: Elsewhere in the AFC East, the Dolphins won their first game, but the Jets lost. The significance of Todd Bowles’ team losing is that when Brady takes the field in week five, he will be handed the reins to a team in sole possession of first place. Regardless of which quarterback the Patriots send out against Buffalo on Sunday, the team will finally have signal caller clarity in two weeks. (CSNNE)

Patriots Reportedly ‘Comfortable If They Have To’ Start Julian Edelman At QB: Speaking of the quarterback situation, with the news that Jacoby Brissett injured his thumb in Thursday’s start – when former Patriot Vince Wilfork landed on him, no less – the Patriots are once again forced to make a difficult decision about who to play. But with all three quarterbacks on the roster unable to play or hindered by injury, will the team turn to former quarterback Julian Edelman? (NESN)

Theo Epstein knows how to beat a curse. Can he do it with the Cubs?: While some are concluding that the Red Sox are the American League’s best, the bizarro version of the team – Theo Epstein’s Cubs featuring Jon Lester, John Lackey, and a curse of its own – remains the front runner for the World Series. Though the sands are shifting, with some pegging Boston as the new favorite, they’ll likely have to overcome old friend Theo and the young, hungry Cubs. (Boston Globe)
