Morning Sports Update: Patriots reportedly pressuring Jimmy Garoppolo to be ready Thursday

As of yesterday, Garoppolo couldn't lift his arm without feeling pain.

Can Jimmy really play tomorrow night? Ross D. Franklin / AP

Bill Belichick didn’t give anything away at his press conference,  Jimmy Garoppolo was a limited participant at practice, while Mookie Betts and David Ortiz carried the Red Sox again.

Patriots want Jimmy Garoppolo to be available: Belichick was as vague as he’s ever been beforehand, but Garoppolo at least took the practice field in a limited capacity Tuesday. According to a sourced report, the team – presumably the football side more than the medical side – wants Garoppolo to be ready as soon as possible. The team reportedly went as far as pointing out that Tom Brady has played through that injury before, in an attempt to convince the quarterback. (Boston Herald)

Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski ‘satisfied’ with how injured hamstring is healing: In other injury news, Rob Gronkowski said that he feels “decent” and that he’s satisfied with the progress he’s making. As to whether he’ll play tomorrow, Gronk said, “We’ll see,” adding that “It will definitely be a coach’s decision, a trainer’s decision. We’ll all come together.” Gronkowski was also a limited participant Tuesday, but took the field wearing pads “to get a feel” for them. (ESPN Boston)

Mookie Betts’ case for American League MVP grows stronger thanks to 200th hit: Mookie Betts had another historic night at Camden Yards even though he didn’t clear the fence with any of his three hits that pushed him past the 200-hit threshold for the season. He became the second Red Sox player to achieve the feat before turning 24, joining Johnny Pesky, and his numbers are now on par with those of Miguel Cabrera during his Triple Crown season in 2012. David Ortiz subtly makes his case for Hall of Fame, not so subtly praises Dustin Pedroia: One player who did go yard last night was David Ortiz, for the second night in a row, clubbing his 36th of the season to center field. Ortiz owns the record for the most home runs in an age-40 season, and as his career statistics continue to shine brighter, it is the numbers he wants people to focus on when considering his Hall of Fame candidacy. He also had very strong praise for Dustin Pedroia. (WEEI)

Jacoby Brissett no stranger to stepping in when a teammate goes down: Jacoby Brissett relayed the story of a high school football game in which an eerily similar situation arose in which he, the backup, was forced onto the field in a big game on an emergency basis after an injury. Curiously, the exact same dilemma came about again when he was quarterbacking at Florida too. The trait everyone seems to be talking about with Brissett is his composure when things go awry.
