Morning Sports Update: Patriots hope Jimmy Garoppolo can suit up Thursday night
Though one sports orthopedist warned that if the injury is as bad as he fears, Garoppolo could worsen the injury if he gets hit.
The Red Sox stretched their AL East lead to four games, Tom Brady spoke about Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett, and the rest of your morning sports need-to-know info.
Will Jimmy Garoppolo suit up Thursday?: The Patriots seem to be preparing for Brissett to start Thursday night, but the question of who will back him up is still very much in tact. The Patriots have yet to work out any quarterbacks, and reportedly don’t plan to sign one at this juncture, leaving Garoppolo the best bet to take on the job even just four days removed from his shoulder injury. Sports orthopedists were divided about whether Garoppolo would be in playing shape. (Boston Globe)
#Patriots still believe there’s a chance Jimmy Garappolo can tolerate pain of AC joint sprain and start vs #Texans

Rick Porcello on dust-up with Manny Machado: ‘It’s September baseball’: Rick Porcello won his major league leading 21st game of the season, in a stellar complete game effort over the Orioles. One of his only misfires happened to tag Baltimore MVP candidate Manny Machado – a cut fastball that never broke inside. The always feisty Machado had a problem with the mistake and stared down Porcello before the two got into it verbally on his way to first base. (WEEI)
Brady happy with wins, but ‘tough to watch’ Patriots play without him: Tom Brady took part in his Monday night interview once more, and shared his thoughts about the Patriots’ wild win on Sunday. Brady said Garoppolo did a great job leading the team to its current 2-0 standing, and said he feels for the younger quarterback’s situation given his “tough injury.” Brady also said it was tough to watch from the sideline, but that it was certainly great to see the team winning without him. David Ortiz becomes the oldest player to hit 35 homers in a season: David Ortiz has had a lot of success at Camden Yards, and though he perhaps hasn’t maintained the torrid pace Mookie Betts has set upon there, as the Baltimore ballpark became home to his 538th career home run last night (Betts also homered). Papi has only 10 games remaining, but given what the slugger can do when he gets hot, is there a chance he could have 40 homers in his age-40 season? (NESN)
Why Charlie Weis is a big believer in Jacoby Brissett: The theme of the week – aside from backup quarterbacks – is former offensive coordinators, as Charlie Weis chimed in with his thoughts on Brissett as the Patriots prepare to take on Bill O’Brien’s Texans Thursday. Weis recruited and coached Brissett when he was at Florida in 2011, and said that the Patriots can believe in the 23-year-old because the confident quarterback will believe in himself. He said Brissett will do his job for the team to win. (NESN)
